A Tailoring House in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong
In the Tsim Sha Tsui district of Kowloon, beside Victoria Harbour, tailoring has been a bustling industry since the mid 20th century. Travelers and merchants passed continually through the burgeoning port, and brought with them came a steady need for well-made tailored clothing. Over time, the workshops in the district became known for making bespoke tailored clothing efficiently and carefully.
The Shanghai Tailors and the Origins of the Craft
In 1960, drawn by a flourishing economy, one of the famous “Shanghai Gang” tailors immigrated to British Hong Kong and established Mode Elegante, an exclusive atelier for women’s clothing. that also offered bespoke tailoring at the landmark Peninsula Hotel. The craftsmen brought with them methods learned in Shanghai workrooms from English, French, Russian, and other European traditions.
In 1979 the Manning Company was established as Hong Kong cemented its international reputation for tailoring.
Continuing in the legacy of excellence
Mr. Aves, the present owner of Manning Company, entered the trade as an apprentice at the age of twelve. Over the next 25 years, he came to learn not only the techniques of experienced cutters and sewers, but also how to manage a tailoring house, expanding its reach worldwide through touring trunk shows.
Bringing the Houses Together
In 2007, Mr. Aves brought together Manning Company and Mode Elegante, combining decades of experience and continuing the work under the same roof, keeping alive the knowledge and patterns in use.
He later brought Shanghai’s Tailor and then Biemonte Wong’s Tailor under the Manning Company banner, securing the expertise and the future of these established shops.
The Workshop Today
Today Manning Company remains in Tsim Sha Tsui, a busy shopping and dining district on the Kowloon side of Hong Kong. The workshop employs over 20 fitters and cutters who continue to produce bespoke garments using the same methods that were passed down through generations of masters and apprentices.

We receive clients in our Hong Kong workshop and travel regularly to the United States and Europe, holding trunk shows to serve our clients abroad.
